Croton's Bravest were alerted to a reported roof fire at Metro-North Croton-Harmon Yards Diesel & Electrical Shop (Building #6) at 5pm this Thursday evening. Minutes later, a full assignment was on the road.
Engine 119, under the command of Lieutenant Colombo, arrived first and established command, reporting a smoldering fire on the north end of the building near tracks 148 & 150. Due to the deteriorating conditions of the roof and prior information from Metro-North Fire personnel, CFD units were unable to access the fire area on the roof, being limited to using the catwalks.
Car 2081 arrived minutes later and assumed Command, putting Lt. Colombo as the Operations Officer. TL44 made the roof and worked with the crew of E118 to assess the fire and roof conditions from above.
Once power was turned off to the high voltage cranes along the ceiling of the shop, personnel from E119 and E120 utilized a lift vehicle to get under the fire safely. From here, they utilized a 1 3/4" line stretched some 350 feet in to the building to extinguish the fire.
With CFD units committed for a prolonged time, Command requested an Engine and Ladder to Station 33 for coverage. This was handled by Montrose E121 and Ossining L41, with Deputy Chief Frank Streany (Car 2086) as their guide.
Just short of an hour after arriving, Command placed the fire "under control" and began releasing units from the scene. The last of the units, E119, TL44 & T10, cleared at 19:25.
Thanks to the cooperation the CFD has received from Metro-North Fire & Safety over the years, units were familiar with the building, the hazards within it as well as the hazards of the building itself. Command was able to coordinate with Car 2641 and Car 2643, Metro-North Fire Chiefs, on scene to ensure the safety of all personnel.
