Mutual Aid UTVs Needed for Tree Fire
By CFD News Team
May 18, 2019
A relatively strong thunderstorm passed through the Croton area on Sunday night / Monday morning, with lightning striking a 75 foot tall maple tree along the Croton Gorge Trail. A local resident out for a morning walk found the burning tree around 10:45 AM and the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was dispatched.
Using 2.5 gallon pressurized water extinguishers and 6 gallon water vests, members from Engine 118 and Tanker 10 were able to knock down the flaming tree trunk, however more water would be needed to complete extinguishment. Car 2081 (Chief Colombo) requested UTVs with firefighting pumps from the Montrose and Buchanan Fire Departments to assist - as the fire was nearly a 1/2 mile into the woods.
Units operated on scene for close to two hours to get the fire extinguished. The COHFD thanks Buchanan and Montrose FD's for their assistance.
